OK... I haven't run a MediaWiki-based site before, so I'm learning as I go here.

I will be adding to this document as I find things helpful. Use the discussion page - click above - to ask questions if you have any.

Creating New Pages

How do I create a new page? There are several paths to creating a new page:

Create a link to the page on another page, then click on the red link which appears

Browse to the intended location of the page, e.g. http://unisystemfanworks.wiki-site.com/index.php/YourNewPageName and click on the edit link.

(Naturally, you will want to change the text YourNewPageName to whatever it is you want to call your page.)

Editing Help

I can't create a better editing resource than this.:

Helpful Site-specific Resources

Categories

To help keep things organized and easy to find, I'm making judicious use of the Category function in MediaWiki. This will help us stay organized. I'm still working out the details on the categories, but so far this is what we have:

When creating an article, all you have to do to place it in a category is to include the text [[Category: Category Name]] somewhere in the body of it. This will place a Category box at the bottom of the page, showing which categories the article belongs to, with links to explore those categories for other articles.

Any article can belong to more than one category; for example, my Fray writeup for Cinematic Unisystem belongs to the categories: Category:Media Conversions and Category: Buffy-Angel categories. It also has its own subcategory, to which it and the character sheets for it belong.

You may notice that some categories share subcategories, like Witchcraft and Armageddon. The reasons for this are obvious, and this allows the two to share material. You still have the option of placing something in the Witchcraft subcategory and not the Armageddon one for example... so if someone is looking for something specific to Witchraft, they'll find your article by browsing the Category, but someone looking in the Armageddon article will not.

Copyright Info

Most of us usually tend to put copyright info out there, just to be safe, because we know Eden doesn't mind us posting fan work up on the Internet. To avoid having to type it all out every time, I included the following template, which can and should be transcluded at the bottom of every page.

To do so, you simply type {{Unisystem Copyright}} in the Edit window, and the following will appear:

The Unisystem is copyright © and Trademark ™ CJ Carella and Eden Studios, 1996-2002, published under exclusive license by Eden Studios.

The Unisystem trademark is used without Mr. Carella's or Eden Studios' permission and neither of those parties is responsible for the content of this publication.

Other templates are also available which work the same way, including:

Template:Buffy Copyright

Template:Angel Copyright

Template:Fray Copyright

Character Sheet Resources

So far, I have created a simple Cinematic Character Sheet layout to use in posting Cinematic Characters.

Simply navigate to Cinematic Character Sheet, click on Edit, and copy the whole blank sheet. Paste it into the edit window of a new page, and fill it in. Try not to save over the blank version :P

As I become more familiar with laying things out in MediaWiki, I may design a nicer-looking (read: more complicated) layout, but this will have to suffice for now. Classic Character Sheet forthcoming.
